Civil Engineering is the oldest and broadest discipline of Engineering which maintains the foundation for our modern society by implementing a range of public and private projects to improve the physical infrastructure and environment. A Civil Engineer comprehends and integrates scientific principles with engineering experience to plan, design and construct the modern infrastructure to enhance the quality of life.

The undergraduate program provides the technocrats of tommorow the theoretical knowledge, which is vital to apply the scientific approach to solve modern day problems that are encountered by the Civil Engineers. The UG Civil Engineering degree facilitates the acquaintance of knowledge to work in the widespread areas of Civil Engineering like Environmental, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation etc.

The Department of Civil Engineering of CIT is committed to inculcate the core competency skills to make the aspiring student strong with theoretical and practical aspects, which makes a graduate to outshine the competition and also to adopt to the challenges of the competitive world. Ms. Sonika M from 5th Semester participated in 65th National Shooting Championship competition in Rifle events held at Thiruvanthapuram, Kerala organized by Karnataka State Rifle Association from 20th November to 09th December 2022 and has secured the 357th position in 10m Rifle Junior Women (ISSF) National Championship and 263rd position in 10m Rifle Junior Women (ISSF) Civilian Championship.

Ms. Sonika M, 5th semester has been selected to represent VTU South Zone in All India Inter University Championship on Shooting (Women) held at Swami Vivekananda Subharti University, Meerut, New Delhi from 05th to 09th April 2023.

Ms. Brunda Mary C, Mr. Dhanush Kumar M D, Ms. Sonika M, Ms. Ashwini P K, Ms. Spoorthy D, Mr. Swaroop Gowda R and Ms. Chitra Shree, student of 3rd year successfully cleared the exam and received certification in the NPTEL online certification course conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras on the topic “Concrete Technology” Jan- April 2023.

Ms. Sonika M from 6th Semester participated in 21st Kumar Surendra Singh Memorial Shooting Championship competition in Rifle events held at Vattiyookkavu, Trivandrum, Kerala from 4th to 16th June 2023.

Mr. Swaroop Gowda R, Secured 1st place in Build It Competition organised by Sri Devi Institute of Technology on 5th and 6th May 2023.

The Project of Ms. Sandhya M S, Mr. Rohith H G and Mr. Deekshith K V, 8th semester, titled “Experimental Study on Wood Ash and GGBS based Geo Polymer Mortar with a combined effect of Sodium Hydroxide and Sodium Silicate” carried out under the guidance of Prof. Pavan Kumar N, Assistant Professor, was selected for Visvesvaraya Technological University Student Project funding the academic year 2021-2022.

The Project of Ms. Harshitha P B, Mr. Thanesh C G and Ms. Archana K S, 8th semester, titled “Pollution Absorbent Pervious Concrete Pavement Block with Bamboo Fibre and RHA” carried out under the guidance of Prof. Pramukh Ganapathy C, Head of the Department and Prof. Impa K A, Assistant Professor, was selected for Visvesvaraya Technological University Student Project funding the academic year 2021-2022.

The Project of Mr. Karthik K N, Mr. Deekshith B L Ms. Yashaswini A S, 8th semester, titled “Performance of Masonry Prepared with Natural Rubber Latex and Natural Resins in Mortar and Concrete Block” carried out under the guidance of Prof. Pramukh Ganapathy C, Head of the Department was selected for State level seminar and exhibition held at VTU, Belagavi by Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology under Student Project Program- 45th Series, for the academic year 2021-2022 for funding.

The Project of Mr. Siddanagouda C B, Mr. K P Palangappa, Mr. Varun Somaiah H G, and Ashik G S, 8th semester, titled “Geotechnical Risk Analysis in Construction of Proposed National Highway that passes through the District of Kodagu that Connects Karnataka and Kerala State” carried out under the guidance of Prof. Pramukh Ganapathy C, Head of the Department was selected by Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology under Student Project Program- 45th Series, for the academic year 2021-2022.

The project of Mr. Gagandeep, Mr. Aiyappa K P, Ms. Anusha T P, and Ms. Lavanya K A, 8th semester titled “Experimental study on the utilization of Cashew nut shell oil and Epoxy Resin in Bituminous Concrete” carried out under the guidance of Mr. Abhilash R Prasad, Assistant Professor was selected by Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology, for the academic year 2020-21 for funding.

The project of Mr. Abhishek H V, Mr. Ashwin R, Mr. Chiranjeevi G C, and Mr. Vishwas M P, 8th semester titled “Mechanical Performance of Masonry Consistency of Basalt and Asbestos Fibres in Mortar and Concrete Blocks” carried out under the guidance of Prof. Pramukh Ganapathy C, Head of the Department and Ms. Savitha T M, Assistant Professor was selected by Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology, for the academic year 2020-21 for funding.

The Project of Mr. Geethan Kariappa K U, Mr. Monish T D, Mr. Muhammed Siraje and Ms. Pranutha B. P, 8 th semester. Titled “ Polymer Modified Concrete” carried out under the guidance of Prof. Pavan Kumar, Assistant Professor was selected by Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology, for the academic year 2018-2019 for funding.

Sonika M from 4th Semester participated in 64th National Shooting Championship competition in Rifle events held at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh organized by Karnataka State Rifle Association from 25th November to 10th December 2021 and has secured the 214th position in 10m Rifle Junior Women (ISSF) Civilian Championship and is certified as ‘Renowned Shot”.

Industrial Visit to “Swarna Bhoomi Habitat – Layout Construction”, Kushalnagar, Kodagu was organized on 12th January 2024. Mr. Manu Pemmaiah, Director, D. R. Shetty and Sons, Bylakuppe and Mr. Mohammed Rafiq, Marketing Executive, gave the insights on different stages of residential construction and marketing strategies.

Industrial Visit to “Harangi Reservoir”, Kushalnagar, Kodagu was organized on 12th January 2024. Mr. Kavi Prasad Kedambadi, Assistant Executive Engineer (Quality Control), and Ms. Sowmya, Assistant Engineer, Harangi Reservoir, explained the history of reservoir, operation and maintenance of hydraulic machines, and also the hydrological parameters of the dam.

  1. Industrial Visit to Nirmithi Kendra, NITK Surathkal campus, Mangalore was organized on 23rd March 2023. Mr. Navneeth, Engineer gave the insights on Low-cost housing, Sustainable building materials and Sustainable approaches of building construction in modern world.

2. Industrial Visit to Sristi Ventures, Padubidri, Udupi was organized on 23rd March 2023. Mr. Bhoopathy Shetty, Managing Director, explained the Manufacturing process of expanded polystyrene panels (EPS Panels), an innovative and modern construction technology which is economical and sustainable.

  1. Industrial Visit to Adani Thermal Power Plant, Padubidri, Udupi was organized on 23rd March 2023. Mr. Huligesha, Environmental Engineer, educated the students on Working principles of thermal power plant, Environmental and pollution control measures adopted in Adani Thermal Power Plant.
  1. A Visit to Commercial Building construction site, Gonikoppal, Kodagu was organized on 13th March 2023. Prof. Pavan Kumar N, Prof. Anil Kumar P S and Prof. Karthik D P, Assistant Professor, accompanied the students and explained the various Building Components, Building Materials and Reinforcement Details used at site.

Technical talk on “Rock Cycle and Importance of Geology in Civil Engineering” on 14th January 2022 by Ms. Roja H D, Geologist, Department of Mines and Geology, Madikeri. The Coordinator for the event was Prof. Thejas A Jain, Assistant Professor.

A talk on “Innovation and Research Thinking to Solve Local Problems” on 9th April, 2022 by Mr. Harsha S, Secretary, Managing Trustee and Chief Instructor at LGS Trust, NGO, Bengaluru.

Two day workshop on “Remote Sensing and GIS” on 9th June and 10th June 2022. The resource persons for the workshop were Dr. Chandan G S, Associate Professor, Department of Applied Geology, Bangalore University and Dr. Jagadeesha M Kattimani, Associate Professor, Department of Applied Geology, Bangalore University.

One day workshop on “Softwares for Civil Engineering” in association with CAD DESK, Mysuru on 16th November 2021. The resource persons were Ms. Mamatha K K, Mr. Anto Naveen and Mr. Rakshith R.

A site visit was arranged for Civil Engineering students to the rainfall affected areas of Kodagu. In the recent past, Kodagu had to face the brunt of natural disaster. A team comprising of Prof. Sachin K C and Prof. Roja H D, Assistant professors and students from Department of Civil Engineering, visited the disaster-hit areas such as Makkandur, Hebbetageri along Sampaje road on 30th August, 2018 in order to collect soil and rock samples to analyze the geo-technical and geological conditions of those areas. Mr. Nagendra, Assistant Director, Department of Mines and Geology, Madikeri, also accompanied them.

A guest talk was organized by the department of Civil Engineering on “ Condition of roads in Coorg” by Col. Vivek Bopanna a retired colonel of Indian Army on 1st, September 2018. He explained the probable conditions for the road failures in Kodagu due to heavy monsoons and explained the different methodologies that can be adopted for the construction of roads in hilly terrain and approaches to overcome such calamities. Adding on he also gave suggestions for budding Civil Engineers to maintain the quality of Civil Engineering works through systematic scientific approach .

Workshop on Microsoft Word and Power Point to the students were conducted by Department of Civil Engineering on 10th September 2018, where the typographical guidelines to draft the VTU project was lime lighted by Prof. Sachin K C and Prof. Bharatesh R Assistant professors, Department of Civil Engineering.
